Waruga Historical Tour + Animal Safary


 
 

 

Waruga grave or tomb is located in the old Sawangan, Airmadidi District, Minahasa, North Sulawesi. Waruga comes from two words, there are Waru which means home and Ruga which means body. So the Minahasan people believe that this tomb is the place where the dead people returned to heaven

Now, numbers of waruga tomb which located in Sawangan graveyard, district of Airmadidi is 104 dotu, in other words clan. Unfortunately, from 104 dotu, only some of them that can still be tens of identified. The rest of it was very difficult to identifiy. Some dotu who can still be recognized are Wenas, Karamoy, Kalalo, Tangkudung, Rorimpandey, Mantiri, Kojongian and other.

From the form of the stone tomb, we can see the job or profession of the dead person who had burried in waruga tomb. If there are pictures of animals, it means the person who died is a hunter. For example, Dotu Tangkudung in waruga, he was a judge. We can see in the picture that he lead a disccusion.

 

The Itinerary :

The ancient Waruga, stone graves (sarcophagi), of the Minahasan people, dating from the Megalithic age are extremely interesting. 144 stone graves were built to house the remains in the sitting position. The pre-Christian belief was that the babies were born in the sitting position in the mother's womb, and it is in this position that humans must pass on to eternity. The engravings on the headstones depict the cause of death, the deceased's hobby, character or occupation, etc. There is a small shop in front of the gate and a small donation is suggested. It is located at Sawangan village near Airmadidi, 24 km from Manado. After that visit to Bitung, Naimundung (animal safary "mini zoo") to see tarsius spectrum the smallest monkeys in the world. In the afternoon, we return to hotel.
